We live at the intersection of Garnet, Kinne and Gray streets in Lebanon. There are a number of children that live in this subdivision, and the streets are very sloped. As a result of the slope, vehicles travel quickly down Garnet onto Kinne, and subsequently down to Meriden Road/Route 120. Additionally, there are poor lines-of-sight from multiple curves in the roads.

We are concerned that the speed of vehicles caused by the slope, and these poor lines-of-sight are endangering the children in the neighborhood, including our 2 young boys.

We'd like to explore the installation of a Stop sign or a speed table(s) to be installed in the vicinity of the Garnet/Kinne/Gray intersection, to limit the speed of the downhill traffic on Garnet and Kinne Streets.

What are the appropriate steps to have this considered?

Hi,

I am currently trying to do something similar where I live, Wolf Road and Memorial Drive. I have been meeting with the Public Safety Committee. It is made up of the Police Chief Alexander (contact his assistant Elizabeth.Beraldi@lebcity.com ) (non-voting), Fire Chief (non-voting), Public Works (non-Voting), and 3 members from the City Council (voting). Cliff Desrosiers (cliffd5632@msn.com), is the City Council member who is the head of the committee. George Sykes (george.sykes@valley.net) and Terri Dudly (terri.dudley@comcast.net) are the other members.

You first step is to start a petition. You can do it online, for free, at various internet sites. Just do a google search. You will also have to go door-to-door since some people don't have internet access. It also helps to put up signs, but be careful where you put them. You can put them on your property, but putting them on the city property may cause some conflict. You could put them on a neighbor's property if you have permission.

After the petition, if you have a large amount of support, then you will need to take it to a Public Safety Committee meeting and present it to the Committee. Or, if you arrange it, give the petition and results to the committee 2 weeks before a meeting and they will send a mailer to every household in the area, notifying them of the meeting. The committee won't make a recommendation without the community having a chance to have their voice heard.

From there, you will have to follow the committee's guidance, but if you are successful, you will present it to the City Council for a deciding vote.

Your process may be slightly different, it depends on who and what is involved. The above process is how I am having to go about things. I have not been able to convince the committee of my proposal, but I still have a chance to present it to the full council for a vote.

Mark (ski4fun1) gave you excellent advice. Did you inquire with the Public Safety Committee, and did you get a satisfactory result?
